Firstly I created a box, in which I extruded out two arms at the side. I then made an inset into the top of the box and extruded it inwards (intruded?) to make the hood of the cloak. I also scaled out the bottom of the cloak to make it flow along the ground, as to leave out any animation of walking.
Next I began to work on the hands for death, which all consist of the same one box, slightly different in dimensions. I placed all of these bones by eye and tweaked them until I was happy with a slightly realistic yet still cartoon like bone structure.
After this I began work on putting the skull together, which I feel is the most important aspect of death, seeing as most of his other features are very inanimate, the skull is the one item on death which allows for him to show emotion and the express himself. I started with a box, in which I intruded two eye sockets far enough to give a good shadow in and around them. I also extruded a lower jaw to give me a feature to work around. I also extruded a small square out of the bottom of the skull to allow me to give it a neck, so that it was not just floating around in the cloak. I also added some nostrils and black spheres to fill the holes in the face.
Once I had finished the skull, I was unhappy with how it looked, and how easy it would be for me to animate it. I decided it would be a much better idea for me to have a skull with a detachable jaw, so I went about creating a new one, with a much more cartoon like feel.
Once I was happy with the skull, I set to work on adding some detail to death, which included removing his large draping cloak, to replace it with a cloak which seemed to wisp away into nothing, meaning that death could float around the stage with ease, making him seem more spectre like, and also a lot easier to animate. This was achieved by using the helix and loft tool.
After this I also made a simple scythe using a cylinder and a plane with the aid of the arc tool.
This brings me to the stage of my model that I am now. In the next few days I intend to add a lot more detail to the cloak of Death, and also to add a lot more detail to the scythe
