Old Man - Creation
Here is a break down of how I made my old man model. This happened quite by accident, but here is how I did it. Firstly I created a sphere, I then extruded out some of the vertexes to form a crude brow and nose. I added a turbo smooth modifier to the sphere and got this result.
After seeing this effect with such a small amount of work, I spent some time moving other vertexes on the head, and this is what I got. Notice that I also made another sphere and used the scale tool to flatten it and turn it into a tongue. I also added a curl to the moustache by using the soft selection tool.
To make the old man's body, I created a box and extruded out two cube shaped inlets. One for an arm and one for a leg, I then added a bevel at the end of both of them to create the hand and foot. Once I was happy with that I had done to the limbs I added a turbo smooth modifier as well as a symmetry modifier. This was the result.
After I had finished this model, I began to bone and skin it. It took me a few weeks to realise that I was not happy with this character compared to the death one I had already made, he seemed to be out of place with him and how I had wanted to have my general theme. So I set about redesigning him using some "Cartoony" inspiration I found on Google. This was the image that I decided to base my new old man model on.
Once again, I started by having a sphere for the head of the man. This time rather than moving single vertexes, I thought I would give an attempt on moving whole polygons instead. I extruded out a large polygon in the middle for the nose, and intruded two polygons on either side of it for the eyes. I then used the connect tool to make a small moustache that come out from underneath his nose. I extruded out his chin and also some hair on the back of his head. Here are some images of the head with and without turbo smooth.
After I had made the head, I used the same techniques I had on the original model of the old man to create the new body and legs, but this time I made them as two separate entities.
Using the exact same methods as on the body, I extruded out some hands for the old man, I bevelled the ends of his fingers to make them seem a bit more organic.
By making an inlet on top of a box and then intruding it into itself, I was able to make the old man's boots/feet. Even though this was a very simple task, I think that the feet of the old man work very well with the rest of his body.
Looking at this man completed, I was much happier with how he was going to fit into my scene rather than the old one. Here is a comparison of them. I had also added some eyes and coloured the old man into the colour scheme I would use in the animation. To make the eyes all I did was use two spheres, and the colours on the man where just from the colour palette in the material settings.
